What are Partial Dentures?

At one time or another, we have all seen a commercial on television featuring someone that reminds of our grandparents in need of denture cream. Maybe we watch it, but most of us probably don’t because we don’t need dentures. We know we may need them later, but most of us probably don’t even know what dentures are.

Dentures are essentially false teeth made to restore the appearance of teeth and the oral function that was lost. Teeth have been known to fall out as we get older which is why we see grandparents starring in denture cream commercials—but they are not the only ones that may have a need for false teeth.

People that still have some original teeth left will get partial dentures. What are partial dentures? If a person still has some teeth remaining in their upper or lower jaw, they will get a partial set of false teeth to cover the gaps left by the missing teeth and give the appearance of a complete set of teeth.

Ideally, they will blend right in with a person’s existing teeth and look just like the rest. The gum-colored plastic base they are set in will help them blend in with the inside of your mouth. They may also come with a metal bridge of some kind to help keep them in place. When you need to clean them all, you have to do is take them out and use whatever cleaner you have.

They can also be fixed. If a person only needs a single tooth, crowns can be placed on the existing teeth for the false one to be fit into before being cemented in place.

If you need them, it can be imperative to your general health and well-being to have them made. Not only will they help keep you healthy, but you will feel a lot better about your smile too.
